National Archives (Kew) offers free digital records

The National Archives in Kew, England is making digital records available on its website free of charge for as long its location is closed to visitors.

Registered users will be able to order and download up to 10 items for free, with a maximum of 50 items over 30 days.

To access the service, you will need to create a free account on the website.

  • Register/sign in to your Discovery account before adding items to their basket (maximum 10 items per basket)
  • Complete the order process to receive a download link, which will remain active for 30 days. (The link will also be saved in ‘Your orders’ in your account for 30 days)

To find records that are available to download for free, filter your search results in the Discovery Catalogue to include records that are “available for download only”.

The National Archives offers a live chat service which provides one-to-one expert research advice. It is available between 4 a.m. and 12 p.m. Eastern Time, Tuesday to Saturday.
